Hardware and Fasteners
The MRC-1000 uses standard hardware available from local and online suppliers wherever possible. This includes machine screws, washers, nuts, spacers, bushings and bearings. Standardization makes replacement due to damage easier and less costly than custom hardware. A basic description of the hardware and where it is used follows.
Machine screws
Machine screws are measured in three dimensions; diameter, pitch and length. One complete revolution of the spiral shape on a screw is called a thread. The threaded portion of a screw is defined using diameter and pitch. The diameter is the maximum measurement of the outside of the thread. This is called the major diameter. The diameter of the solid inner core of the thread is called the minor diameter but this is not typically part of the nomenclature. The pitch for imperial screws is the number of threads per inch. This equates to the number of turns required for the fastener to move 1-inch if the thread is engaged. Thread angle and pitch diameter are standard among common fasteners so we will not concern ourselves with those measurements.

Imperial screws with a diameter less than .25 inches use a number system to indicate diameter. Common sizes start at #0 and increase in steps of 2 up to #12. There are smaller and in-between sizes but they are less common. Imperial screws with a diameter of .25 inches or more use a fractional inch measurement to indicate diameter.
Metric screws are measured in mm and use the same concept of major diameter and thread pitch as nomenclature. The difference is that metric thread pitch is defined by the spacing between threads in mm per turn instead of turns per inch. A common metric size is M5x.8mm. This screw is 5mm in diameter and would move .8mm against the thread for every complete turn. There is currently no metric hardware on the MRC-1000.
The most common size used on the MRC-1000 is a 1/4-20 bolt. This has a .25-inch major diameter with 20 threads per inch. Other sizes you may find on your chassis include: 4-40, 6-32, 10-32 and 3/8-16.
The length of a screw is measured from the surface of the material it will seat against to the bottom most point of the depth it will reach when fully seated. For a screw with a head that sits above the surface this is the length of the entire bolt minus the head height. The most common style of this screw on the MRC-1000 is called the Socket Head Screw and uses a hex driver or allen key during installation.

Socket Head Screw
One type of screw that is designed to sit flush with the top surface is called a flat head. For this style the length is measured including the head. There are additional measurements for flat head bolts as shown in the diagram below. For our purposes we use standard 82-degree hex drive flat head screws and can safely ignore head height, head diameter and drive size in describing the size.

Threaded nuts
Nuts are an alternative to threaded parts when using machine screws. A through-hole is required so that the screw can pass all the way through all of the parts to be joined. The parts are then clamped together by the nut on one side and the head of the screw on the other. It is common to use a washer to spread out the clamping force and keep from damaging the parts.
Measurements for threaded nuts are matched to machine screws using the same nomenclature and standards. A 1/4-20 nut is needed to fit a 1/4-20 screw and so on. There are different styles of nuts depending on the application so research is encouraged.
Most of the nuts on the on the MRC-1000 have some sort of locking mechanism intended to keep them from loosening during hard use. The majority are called Nylon Insert Locknuts and they use a small circle of Nylon on one side of the nut to capture the screw and keep it from vibrating loose. You will notice the screw takes more force as it encounters the Nylon because it is cutting the threads as you turn.

Washers and Spacers
Washers are small discs with holes in the middle that help to spread the clamping load from screws. They can decrease part deformation while increasing the holding power of the fasteners. They are named by the diameter of the screw that is supposed to pass through them. The actual inside diameter is typically larger than the name suggests to allow for variance among fasteners. For example, the 1/4” general purposed washer used in many applications on the MRC-1000 has an actual inside diameter of ~.281 inches.
Bearings and Bushings
Bearings and bushings are used to support rotating assemblies like axles. They are named by their inside and outside diameter. Additional measurements may be thickness and flange dimensions. Bearings and bushings typically match their named measurements very closely. We use bearings in the drivetrain of the MRC-1000. Bearings have an inner and outer ring that can rotate separately. These rings ride on balls or rollers to provide smooth operation. Bushings can be made of a variety of low friction materials.
